What is family therapy like?

Depending on the modality that your family therapist uses, there could be variations.  At Potential 22 Psychotherapy we are systemically trained therapists as opposed to only individual therapy.  We draw from a source of different modalities and psychotherapeutic models such as Internal Family Systems, Structural, Emotionally-Focused, Solution-Focused and so on.

Family therapy is like stepping into a safe and supportive space where everyone's voice is heard and valued. It's a collaborative process where each family member has the opportunity to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns openly. Together with a trained therapist, families explore patterns of communication, roles within the family, and how these dynamics influence their relationships. Through dialogue, reflection, and practical exercises, families gain insight into their interactions and learn effective strategies to foster understanding, harmony, and resilience within the family unit.

Is Family Therapy right for us? We've never worked with a therapist before.

Here are a list of common reasons that we get asked as therapists to help with with regards to families.  If you don't see your reason in this list, call us for a FREE consultation and we can discuss your specific case and whether therapy is right for you.

Here are some common reasons people seek the help of a family therapist:

  1. Communication issues: Difficulty expressing thoughts and feelings, frequent misunderstandings, or conflicts that escalate quickly.
  2. Parenting challenges: Struggles with discipline, differing parenting styles, or concerns about a child's behavior.
  3. Marital or relationship problems: Constant arguing, lack of intimacy, infidelity, or considering separation or divorce.
  4. Blended family issues: Adjusting to new family structures, conflicts between step-siblings, or navigating co-parenting arrangements.
  5. Life transitions: Adjusting to changes such as a new baby, moving to a new home, job loss, or illness.
  6. Grief and loss: Coping with the death of a family member or pet, divorce, or other significant losses.
  7. Behavioral or emotional concerns: Dealing with a family member's mental health issues, substance abuse, or behavioral problems.
  8. Family trauma: Processing and healing from traumatic experiences such as abuse, accidents, or natural disasters.
  9. Lack of boundaries: Difficulty setting and respecting boundaries within the family, leading to conflict or resentment.
  10. Seeking to improve overall family dynamics: Wanting to strengthen bonds, enhance communication skills, or simply grow closer as a family unit.
These are just a few examples, and every family's situation is unique.

Does Insurance or OHIP cover my sessions?

Psychotherapy services are not covered by OHIP.  However, most private insurances in Ontario do offer a benefits package that includes psychotherapy sessions.  Each insurance is different with regards to how many sessions or what percentage of each session they will cover.  They also all have varying limits for this type of benefit.  It's simple to find out, you can call your insurance and find out if psychotherapy is covered as well as what specific amount of the cost.

How do I get refunded by my insurance for the sessions? Do you offer direct billing?

Currently, we do not offer direct billing although we may in the future.  Getting a refund from your insurance is simple.  You pay the cost of your session each time and get your receipt sent to you immediately.  You can then go ahead and claim it with your insurance.

How many sessions of Psychotherapy will we need to do?

How many sessions of Family Therapy are needed for your specific needs is entirely subjective.  We don't have a specific set number of sessions that are required.  Typically, we see families for an average of 10-12 sessions where there isn't any complex trauma that needs to be dealt with. In cases of complex trauma we have also seen 20-30 sessions.

Our process is collaborative and we work with you to meet your needs.  All we ask is that, preferably, you let us know a session beforehand if you plan for it to be your last one so that your therapist can work with you during your last session to summarize benefits/conclusions gained from your work together.
